Located on the northern flank of Mount Hood, this second home for contractor Tom Kelly and his wife, Barbara Woodford, represents a significant benchmark: It achieved the West Coast’s first LEED Silver for Homes certification. Designed to be “net-zero” in its energy use, it features solar-tracking photovoltaic cells, which generate more power than the house uses, sending excess energy back into the utility grid. Besides being oriented for optimal passive solar warming in winter and wind-cooling in summer, the house features a menu of new sustainable materials: post-consumer paper, fly-ash cement, Agriboard cabinets, and Douglas fir recycled from vinegar vats.
