“Beautiful design, creative use of materials, good daylighting, wise selection of sustainable equipment and products.” —Dennis Allen
Neil Kelly designer Janel Campbell arrived at this 1960s vintage Lake Oswego kitchen to find a shadowy, outdated room with dark cabinetry, tile countertops, and water-stained hardwood floors. But a recent remodel throughout the rest of the Northwest Contemporary home provided the inspiration (and the palette of materials) to integrate a thoughtful design into the family’s cooking space, which looks out over a multilevel terrace garden and offers sporadic glimpses of Mount Hood.
The new kitchen’s most striking quality is its dynamic blend of seemingly incongruent shapes and materials. To create a subtle juxtaposition with the room’s linear bones, Campbell incorporated bold curves into the stainless steel ventilation hood and the seating area, where a floating sandblasted-glass breakfast bar supported by custom stainless steel legs invites and guides both family and guests into the space. A stair-stepped mix of natural and painted cabinetry provides a geometric echo to the slope of the vaulted ceiling while breaking up the strong horizontal lines of the countertops and backsplash.
A slate floor made of tiles of varying size and hue creates a striking organic foundation for the kitchen, setting off the gray laminate base-cabinets. Natural tones and grains in the hickory-veneered cabinets, inset madrone butcher block, a cedar backsplash, and slate tiling contrast with the sleek quartz countertops, glass bar, and stainless steel appliances. Murano-glass pendant lamps fill the kitchen with a warm, earthy glow. As part of her overarching sustainable approach, Campbell chose Agriboard cabinet boxes, Cambria countertops (made of 90 percent reclaimed material), and locally sourced madrone to make this a vibrant expression of regional style.
