Paws, Saws, Tails, and Nails

When Arciform owners Richard and Anne DeWolf’s beloved Afghan Hound, Salvador Doggie, passed away late last year, the couple was sad, but also inspired to merge the two great passions of their life—animals and remodeling. The result is Paws & Saws, a June 6 tour of six pet-friendly homes.
Arciform, Green Hammer, and Mosaik Design came together to design spaces that get pooches out of the doghouse and into the home as an integral part of the family. Considerations like low VOC paints, non-toxic finishes, and floors with enough traction for dogs’ nails, have created a more livable environment for not only pets, but their human companions as well. With creative design additions like a litter box built into cabinetry and a comfy dog bench with storage underneath, these designs show you how to streamline your home and keep the kibbles and bits off the floor. Come and see that even the simple addition of a tiny ramp will let aging cats continue to enjoy the freedom of the great outdoors.
Do note: the tour is for humans only. But your pets will appreciate the training you’ll receive while away. Animal behavior experts will be on hand to get you to think beyond carpeted cat towers with solutions to correct naughty behaviors that lead to damaged furniture. Holistic veterinarian Jeff Judkins of Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic and Rubi of Heal dog massage therapy are among the specialists you can connect with throughout the tour and after party.
To top it off, emerging designers from Marylhurst University, PNCA, PSU and other local schools have been invited to showcase their skills in a pet furniture design competition. The People’s Choice Award allows you to vote for your favorite, and a judging panel of pet experts, architects, and designers will select a winning design to be fabricated by Arciform and sold for further fundraising through the Oregon Humane Society gift shop.
