I’m a Fluxus fan so I’m down with artists’ editions. One of the benefits of the edition can be that it is priced in a way that makes it an easy access point for the beginning collector.

But I want to talk about the comfort-level contemporary artists feel with creating not edition but product (and there is a difference), from surface design to products like these killer rugs, designed by Portland artist Jesse Rose Vala (who was represented by the much-missed motel gallery) for Khaden. I find it fascinating. It’s a new day when no one in the contemporary art world blinks an eye at design-art hybrids like the “functional objects” (read: “furniture”) created by major contemporary artists like Rirkrit Tiravanija with Cumulus Studios. Artists involved with the design of the everyday? Like.
