White on White and the Sea and the Studio

Spending a few days at the coast, I fell in love all over again with purple urchins, blue-green anemones, and sea stars in shades of pumpkin, purple, and deep pink. The tide pools at the foot of Yaquina Head are among the best I’ve seen. The urchins, in particular, are so amazing, using their spikes to slowly move kelp fragments toward their mouths. They brought to mind some of Heather Knight’s work (above). For all the color in the sea, the shore is really about the bleaching of rock and shell in the salt and sun.

The anemone form brings to mind another visit I paid recently to the studio of Portland artist Eugenia Pardue whose work you can see at Heidi McBride Gallery and hung in the Gerding Theater at the Armory in the Pearl District during the run of Grey Gardens. Her lush white-on-white botanical-themed reliefs built up with acrylic paint are delicious.
