Yard, Garden and Patio Show Round-up

I spent a good part of Saturday afternoon working at and browsing through the Yard, Garden and Patio Show. If you stopped by the Portland Spaces’ booth and picked up your $1 copy of the magazine, it was good to meet you!

Here are some of my favorite highlights:

Our friends at Pistils Nursery had a beautiful booth (maybe the best-designed at the show) and showed off some of their beautiful terrariums, like the round one we showed in January’s Desirables column, plus these more laboratory glass looking pieces:

Hughes Water Gardens displayed a beautiful copper rain chain set. Rain chains are not just beautiful, they’re also extremely sustainable (for information about the benefits of rain chains, click here):

I saw lots of water and fire fountain features in the display gardens. Most were just a fountain with a fire ring surrounding, but this more gothic looking piece was pretty striking. The fire and water coexisted in the same vessel. It would be gorgeous on a deck, but I could do without the tusk-looking glass pieces surrounding it. It was in JP Stone Contractors display garden, designed by L Meyer Design:

I was drawn into the demonstration of this clever, new-to-me product called the Circlehoe. The nifty little device prevents root and stem damage that can occur from regular hoes, plus it’s ergonomic and better for your back. (Sorry for the poor quality of these photos.):

And my favorite, orchids. Just had to share—if only I could grow these successfully:

Overall, there were some clever products, but I didn’t see a whole lot that blew me away. Lots of decks, hot tubs and seeds. We’ll be at the Portland Home and Garden Show at the Expo Center starting Wednesday and running through Sunday. Stop by our booth, #906 in Hall E. We’ll be selling the magazine again for just $1 (a $4 discount from newsstand!) I’m curious to see what indoor and outdoor ideas I’ll find there, so stay tuned.
