Trees For All Seasons Launch
Owner of the extraordinary Cistus Design, a nursery on Sauvie Island, Sean Hogan celebrates the launch of his new book, Trees for All Seasons (Timber Press) with a reception tonight, Monday, November 17 at 7 PM at Pastaworks SE Hawthorne). Tickets are $39.95 and include a copy of the book and food and wine tastings. Call 503-228-4651 ext 7600 to purchase.
The book covers broadleaved evergreens, many of which have apparently only recently become commercially available. These include “the drought-tolerant, russetbarked manzanitas; the finely textured, glossy-leaved azaras; and the exquisitely fragrant michelias. Also included are little-known gems from such well-known genera as the hollies and oaks.”
If you’ve ever been out to Cistus, you’ll know that not only does Hogan know his stuff, he’s creative, thorough, and adventurous when it comes to sourcing plants. This makes him uniquely positioned to introduce an underused tree category to plant lovers everywhere.

You are so right, Daniel. For those of us, too, who lived in places previously where the variety of trees was limited, Portland is a cornucopia. And I love them every time of year, bare-branched just as much as when they’re wearing their fiery fall ballgowns or their summer greens. Spaces did a feature about trees in a recent issue which I loved. I’ll look forward to reading your piece about them.

I think people living in Portland often take it for granted how great and varied the trees around us are. Few of us live in an area where we don’t have a tree to welcome our view. I am going to write more on this at pdxremodeler.com.
