Phonofone by Science & Sons

We included this ultra-slick Science & Sons Phonofone in the latest issue of Spaces. Available at Winn Perry (2505 SE 11th, Suite 102)—the Eastside store for modern gentlemen that you have to see to believe…one part Old World classic and one-part cutting edge contemporary—the white ceramic Phonofone amplifies the output of iPod earbuds (you just place the earbuds into slots in the top) with remarkable volume and tone. It’s a seashell, a french horn, a shofar, an ear trumpet, or an early Victrola…and like all of the above, it doesn’t come with a power cord. Audiophiles may quibble, but the rest of us are just going to marvel that that much sound can come out of that beautiful object.

Cup speakers by Dmitry Zagga

Now here’s the 25-cent version. Reported on Treehugger via Yanko Design, Dimitri Zagga came up with this ultra low-tech speaker set that uses the same principles of passive amplification…that is, if you can compare a french horn to a cheerleader megaphone…and I’m willing to stretch.

Now we just have to figure out where to get those pretty white paper cups…no printing, thank you.
