Lite Brite, Making Things With Light
It was the last night of Portland Fashion Week…I’d arrived on time and so before the show actually started not quite Marc Jacobs late, but late, I had plenty of time on my hands to think about…light. About the otherwise nondescript Morrison Bridge at night awash in colored light as seen from the Burnside or Hawthorne bridges thanks to Paddy Tillett and the Willamette Light Brigade in partnership with Pacific Power.
Thinking about space-defining light-based work by James Turrell and Oliafur Eliasson;
or Robert Irwin; about Dan Flavin’s “Untitled (To Donna) II” at the Portland Art Museum and the massive orange globe above the horizon of our recent harvest moon.
I recall a TBA performance by Akira Kasai at the Newmark where light played as strong a role as that of the solo dancer—framing, washing out, pinpointing detail in the movement.
Above, 14 Square where Fashion Week was held: an open white-raftered space piped and draped to within an inch of its life and lit up like a Christmas tree by Brilliant Lighting Solutions making if not something of nothing, then of something, quite something else.
There is, in the potential of unleased spaces at street level and in high rise, the opportunity for magic in the exploration of altering glass expanses from within, using only light.
ASIDE: Would that we all had lighting designers on hand to illuminate exterior and garden in ways both dramatic and dramatically subtle. (Oh, and to light our interiors as well, making us and our spaces 34% more gorgeous.)
