We briefly mentioned Heath Ceramics in January’s Home Away (on page 50; you have picked up your copy of Spaces, haven’t you?) about Yakuza Lounge. The pottery is chef Micah Camden’s choice for the restaurant’s everyday dinnerware (he chose the Plaza line in the linen color). Started by Edith Heath in the mid-1940s, the Sausalito, California-based company is one of the few mid-century, handmade pottery companies that still exist in the States. I love the line’s simplicity and handsome curves, plus they’re super durable (perfect for the hard restaurant life or for your everyday wear and tear). Here in Portland, you can buy Heath Ceramics at Canoe.

Also, check out Heath Ceramics: The Complexity of Simplicity that’s full of beautiful photos, history and insight about the line.

Heath pottery is great stuff, but incredibly expensive when purchased new. However, if you’re vigilant on eBay you can find some good deals on complete sets (like I did a year or so ago). Sea & Sand is a great pattern that I don’t think is still in production, but turns up on eBay with reasonable frequency.

Great tip—thanks Jeremy. Scouring eBay is a great tip no matter what, I think, as long as you’re knowledgeable about what you’re looking for.
