When is a Bridge more than a Bridge?

At 6 p.m. this evening at City Hall, that’s the question that will be on a lot of people’s minds. Will Portland’s first bridge across the Willamette in over 35 years be one driven by aspiration and civic will or one created through fear, compromise and a budget-driven design process?

A model of the proposed Willamette River Crossing of the Portland–to–Milwaukie MAX light–rail line (first pedestrian/bike/transit–only bridge in the United States) will be unveiled at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture by the estimable and always eloquent designer of the bridge, Miguel Rosales, at 7 p.m.

This evening, sponsored by The Architecture Foundation of Oregon, the Portland chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and Portland Spaces will kick-start a valuable public comment phase (for which an e–mail data bank will be created to keep the wider public informed of the progress of the design as the bridge proceeds) on the preferred design by Rosales + Partners and Schlaich Bergermann and Partner LP. The bridge, which Rosales calls the “hybrid,” will be an unprecedented combination of the cable-stay and suspension designs. TriMet is now further studying the proposed bridge’s design and cost before proceeding with preliminary engineering.

The issue for many people (echoed by an Oregonian report) is that Trimet, “remains nervous about anything that deviates from bridges of more common design.”

The question isn’t whither a bridge, but will Trimet (ignoring the unanimous support of the Portland Design Commission and Willamette Bridge Advisory) forgo vision for short-term value and choose a “low cost/no cost aesthetic enhancement spread-sheet driven alternative that devalues public opinion, the design community and the magnificent view corridor of the river to save a shekel or two.

The model will be on view at Portland City Hall beginning throughout the month of April .
