For anyone who braved the hours of testimony on the proposed demolition of Memorial Stadium at last week’s City Council meeting —a John Ford-like epic that featured everyone from Doug Obletz, the AFO’s Jane Jarrett and Rick Potestio to former Governor Vic Atiyeh—the message was clear: slow down, engage public process and puh-leaze let’s look at sustainable alternatives for adaptive reuse.

This is the cry from most quarters. Except of course from that other rapidly decaying institution, the Daily Newspaper . It’s not surprising— and apologies to my many friends on the “inside” — adaptive reuse is a foreign concept to many involved in that form of “old growth media.”

Among the best ideas that has emerged, alongside those of Doug Obletz and Rick Potestio (pictured above), is Forrest Smith’s thoughtful plan to put baseball downstream near the OMSI campus. Best part of Smith’s idea is the site would be scaleable to MLB at some point in some uncertain future.

What’s been the most intriguing outgrowth of all of this kerfuffle is the viable alternatives and engaging solutions that emerged when our City decided to behave like most other cities and obviate public process with an accelerated attack plan. CES Wood was right. . .good citizens, riches of the city and so forth. Perhaps this kind of thinking will challenge Portland to engage on a new level where design, public process, and citizen-designers all have a hand at the table and we produce some true public-interest architecture.

So what’s on deck?

Today, Monday, April 20 at 4 p.m., Mayor Adams will be providing an update on the Rose Quarter’s re-development planning The press conference will take place at the Rose Room on the 3rd floor of Portland City Hall. Sam will talk for fifteen minutes, followed by questions.

That’ll give you enough time to grab a cup of coffee, some cheap stadium-style beer, or a vat of boiling oil and meet outside City Hall (on 4th Avenue) at 5:45 pm for a press conference called by Portland Beavers Baseball fans and MLS supporters urging Portland City Council to approve the stadium proposals at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

Then Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 21, at 6 p.m., the AIA will hold a rally opposing the proposed demolition of Memorial Coliseum at the American Institute of Architects’ Center for Architecture, at 403 NW 11th Avenue (corner of 11th and Hoyt in the Pearl). Supporters are urged to bring themselves, their voice and a protest sign (extra points for good architectural lettering or a well-selected mid-century modern sans serif font). The organizers will supply the beer.

Memorial Coliseum should not be demolished. Period. It is a significant piece of International Style Modern Architecture in a City that has few good modern architecture examples. For a City that is trying to call itself a ‘Design Capital’, we should keep our best architecture and build good contemporary works to add to our richness. In art parlance: demolishing a ‘Rothko’ and replacing it with a ‘Norman Rockwell knockoff’ is appalling.

As both an architect and a huge fan of bringing MLS to town, I feel a bit like choosing which parent to live with after they divorce. The Timbers need a soccer-specific stadium to join, and PGE Park is a great opportunity for that, especially since PSU Football will benefit as well. But at the same time Memorial Coliseum is a valuable piece of historic architecture that probably deserves to be preserved far more than many other “historic” buildings in Portland.

But I strongly feel that, while preservation is important, change is inevitable and innovation is what brings benefit instead of turmoil out of change. So if I have to choose between MLS and Memorial Coliseum, I choose MLS. But I sincerely hope that a solution allowing for both of these happens.

I question the very idea of a “24-hour entertainment district.” This isn’t vegas, and a lot of places in Portland are closed early on weekends precisely because there is no need for them to be open 24 hours a day! Trying to make a tourist attraction is not a sufficient rationale for tearing down Portland landmarks. Please build our city for people that live here, not for convention-hopping executives.

So seriously, Mom and Dad stop fighting, for the kids!

The MC is useless now. The MC does not generate revenue, it cost the city (tax payers) a lot of money each year to keep this useless arena open. The Rose Garden is one of the best if not the best arenas in the world. I attend many events in both arenas (Blazers, Winter Hawks, Rodeos, ect.) with my wife and two boys each year. It is a much more comfortable and enjoyable experience watching any event at the Rose Garden vs MC. The MC has aged very well, but serves no purpose for our city anymore. This location would be ideal for a baseball stadium with its views of the city. If the baseball stadium is built with the engineering design/intent for future expansion for MLB it would be money well spent for our growing city.
