“We are gradually improving the grounds in accordance with your plans.”

Those are the 1891 words of Leland Stanford—transcontinental railroad tycoon, U.S. Senator, Governor of California and founder of his just opened eponymous university—to his selected landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

It was a hollow statement given the years of frustration Olmsted experienced in working with the willful and opinionated Stanford.

Stanford wanted a formal French neo-classical campus to spring from 8,000 acres in Palo Alto, CA. Olmsted recommended looking to Spanish or Greek architecture given the warmer climates. (A fine California Mission style was the end result. Olmsted won this round.)

Olmsted suggested nestling it against the mountains. Stanford wanted it smack in the open plain. (Stanford won on this argument.)

Olmsted proposed the imminent sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens for a frieze. Stanford didn’t know who he was. (Saint-Gaudens ended up writing a description that another artist built though it all fell down during the 1906 Earthquake—a draw, at best.)

In the end, after all the back and forth and bickering, Olmsted was not even invited the opening ceremonies of Stanford’s new, soon to be legendary, institution.

Leave it to a Portland architectural firm to help give Olmsted his revenge. BOORA Architects is in the middle of a massive multi-million dollar master plan and building project at Stanford University revolving around a new Science and Engineering Quad, aka SEQ2. Last spring, the Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building or—Y2E2 for short—opened as a major multidisciplinary educational center of innovative green principles. The first of four buildings in this SEQ2 under BOORA’s direction, Y2E2 oozes excellent energy efficiency and green features such as salvaged recycled Redwood for trellises, recycled rainwater, an innovative light filled and virtual internal quad atrium, and experimental solar paneling, all while housing some of the most brilliant minds working to discover the next great idea.

Olmsted’s original master plan had always called for matching quads to flank the now iconic central Main Quad perpendicular to the Oval Park approach. However, upon the death of Leland Stanford in 1893, his wife began a series of decentralized building projects throughout the campus. As the 20th century progressed, Olmsted’s vision was further altered and it was not until the university entered its second century that his plan, and BOORA’s work on it, really began to take shape.

Taking on the “C” Quad in the above Olmsted sketch, BOORA stitched it to the Main Quad with a series of plazas and colonnades that shared similar alignments, stone walls, red tile roofs and archway heights.

They also handled the desire for increased classrooms, labs, and educational space—a total of 500,000 square feet for all four buildings—with Olmsted’s vision of shorter buildings. By massing the new SEQ2 structures slightly taller than their Main Quad brethren but continuing a natural evolutionary rise, the design purposefully creates intimacy without feeling overly intimidated and furthers the academic cottage system that Olmsted and his architectural partner on the project, Charles A. Coolidge, had fought for.

With three more buildings in the works for SEQ2, and the stalwart and inventive BOORA on hand to design at least two of them, this Portland firm is well on their way to creating a lasting legacy both for themselves, as well as for the resuscitation of a classic—if albeit somewhat latent—Olmsted plan.
