The DJC this morning reported: “Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects has been selected by Vestas, the world’s largest supplier of wind turbines, to design the firm’s new American headquarters office building in Portland.” Read a tad more here

This is good, full-speed-ahead news for Mayor Sam Adams and his quest to defibrillate the economy and bring jobs (green jobs, at that) to Portland. Vestas Wind Systems, the Danish wind-power company, would likely bring 800+ (largely white-collar) jobs to the city, and now clearly this is becoming real.

As we’ve said previously, the rumor mill suggests that Vestas’ $250 million No. American HQ will likely be (dollars to Danishes!) at the South Waterfront.

Since the wind-turbine wizards desire (at minimum) 400,000 sq.ft. of new Platinum LEED-certified space , where else could it go? USPS Main Post office site ? One of the proposed uses for the Hoyt Street site includes a corporate campus. . .hmmm.

With OHSU cutting 1000 jobs and hitting short-term skids (they’ve recently suffered $39 million in investment losses and are trying to shave between $30-35 million off their budget), might they want to play poker with some of their south-of-Marquam Bridge/north-of-SoWa parcel?

Devo-contruction gawkers have speculated that Vestas might be eyeing Block 33, a 91,000 sq. ft “superblock” that OHSU acquired a leasehold interest in —slated for a 1,400+ stall parking structure that will serve as a foundation structure, from which airspace will be conveyed to PDC for the development of the neighborhood’s first affordable housing units.

Where than does this leave the promise of significant affordable housing at the waterfront development?

Jobs, housing for another million folks, economic stimulation, fulfilling public promises. . . something rotten from the state of Denmark? 800+ jobs and a hot-cash injection to shore up the gaps in the $1.9 billion SoWa development says, absolutely not—but let’s make sure we have plenty of opportunity to weigh greater good while things are still ripe.

Ask any affordable housing developer around town and they will tell you that the lack of affordable housing in SoWa is a very soar subject. Vestas at Block 33 will cost millions of dollars and hundreds of homes for the working class. Vestas can go WHEREVER they want, why are they taking a block slated for affordable housing? Isnt affordable housing part of the reason why a park is going in across the street? Besides, if a corporate headquarters goes in across from the park or on the greenway for that matter, those areas will be even more dead than they are now!

It’s a bit much to be complaining about the lack of affordable housing in this real estate market, isn’t it? Affordable housing is everywhere you look.

And to think that we would place obstacles in the way of an up-and-coming company (a “green” company, no less) that wants to locate in Portland and bring jobs and millions of dollars here is beyond absurd. It’s criminal. But then, that’s the Portland way when it comes to business—hence all the corporate flight to the suburbs.
