The Portland Biz Journal reported today on the sale of the Spalding Building aka the Oregon Bank Building at 319 S.W. Washington. The 103,000-square-foot historic office building was purchased for $12.5 million by a genial-sounding LLC, Manchester Capital Management—a firm “dedicated to serving wealthy families address the broad range of topics and issues that relate to their wealth.”

I wouldn’t have thought much about the sale of the building (on behalf of a slightly more specious sounding LLC, Three Nineteen Washington), except for two things:
* Who’s got (to paraphrase Damon Runyon) the “potatoes to spare” in this economic climate?
* The unassuming 12-story, American Renaissance-style “skyscraper” from 1911 was notably designed by the great Cass Gilbert (1859-1934).

Gilbert, a pioneering American architect and contemporary of George Post, Daniel Burnham, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., got his start at the firm of McKim, Mead and White, serving as assistant to Stanford White (who, fans of EL Doctorow’s Ragtime will know, was later gunned down by a cuckolded Harry Thaw).

Some of Gilbert’s more respectable Gilded Age triumphs include the domed Minnesota State Capitol, Manhattan’s Woolworth Building, a Whartonesque fantasia that was being built concurrently with Portland’s Spalding Building (and was for a decade the boss O.G. of skyscrapers), and the iconic vertical pang that is the New York Life Building.

Jinkies, it feels a little like a mystery. . .Anonymous Wealthy Investor, the Historic former Oregon Bank Building. . .What’s going into this building? With the economy in turmoil, what could they be thinking? What nefarious plans lay on the horizon? Could it be that a clue lies at the very foundation of Cass Gilbert building, based on the construction principles of a classical column, i.e. base, shaft, and capital? What could those three words be telling us?
