Uwajimaya Renderings

Of all the projects proposed in Portland, this is my favorite. I sincerely hope Sockeye Development is able to land its proposed housing development anchored by Asian grocer Uwajimaya in Old Town. Until that happens, all we have are these lovely renderings courtesy of the Portland Development Commission. Enjoy.

Interesting to note that there’s already a nice collection of local businesses sprouting up along Fifth Avenue. Something called the Davis Street Tavern is about to open next to the Someday Lounge. The future looks bright for Old Town, but this development would seal the deal. Let’s hope the PDC doesn’t totally screw it up. This is the PDC we’re talkinng about.

How could they possibly screw this one up? There will be no one in opposition to this development. It would provide exactly the type of momentum that Old Town as lacked as long as any of us can remember. Funny…I remember a Willamette Week story from like 20 years ago talking about how Old Town was about to turn a corner. It never happened Since last year, the press has been full of similar stories and it seems there is actually some weight. Fingers crossed, fingers crossed, fingers crossed.

“There will be no one in opposition to this development”
Been living in Portland long?

Good point Erica. The best thing about Portland is that everyone’s opinion matters. Unfortunately when it comes to new developments, this holds true. Someone will probably oppose this development. If they do, they’re crazy. Old Town is a terrible place, and I can’t imagine a better fix.

I love that Uwajimaya is coming to Chinatown. That is a lot of housing, and if it is market rate, the residents will drive all the nightclubs within a 3 block radius out of business. That is of course if streetcar construction on the couplet doesn’t. The UofO will buy up the vacant blocks with Portland tax money. Portland-style urban renewal.

It will be a great project for Chinatown, a good fit, which is difficult in that area. Uwajimaya works in Seattle’s Chinatown, and is a good neighbor. Good on them.

I didn’t realize that Block 32 was part of the deal. This could add some needed energy to Burnside.
