Boutique Hotels Will Boom, Slow
Libby Tucker at the Daily Journal of Commerce reports the city’s hotel boom will slow in 2008. In the meantime, here’s what we have to look forward to. Several projects will be completed in 2008, most notably to the PDX streetscape, a sleek remake of the Days Inn into the Hotel Modera, by Holst Architecture. Other forthcoming hotels that can claim boutique status, The Nines, Hotel Fifty and the Cornelius Hotel, come on the heals of the success of the Ace Hotel and its Eastside predecessor, the Jupiter Hotel. Both projects have been vital catalysts for revitalization in their respective neighborhoods.
There are, of course, rumors that the so-called “Bathhouse Block,” the triangle-shaped parcel adjacent to the McMenamins Cellar bar at the confluence of Stark Street, Burnside and 13th Avenue, could also become a boutique hotel in the future. It’s curious that with all of these hotel projects in the city center that that the Pearl District still lacks a single hotel room. Will that change?

It’s interesting what this wave of boutique hotels says about who’s coming to Portland. They differ from larger hotels in fundamental ways: They tend to be busier on the weekends instead of during the week and they tend to really revitalize their surrounding areas. Maybe someone ought to put one in Old Town.

Isn’t Hoyt Street giving that site north of Tanner Springs the eye for hotel development?

Hi Alison. I’ve heard that too. I also knew that W was scouting the Pearl a few years ago but gave up. Rumor has it W is interested in the Bathhouse Block, but currently about 20 rumors surround that site: 20-story apartment tower, W Hotel, Mac Store, McMenamins soaking pool bathhouse, restaurant by Kenny Giambalvo. You name it.

That’s a pretty sleek hotel. I live nearby and heard that Higgins will move a bistro into the ground floor.
