Monday Landmarks Commission Retreat. (City Hall, 1221 SW 4th Ave., Pettygrove Room)

Thursday Developer Joe Weston’s vision of a forest of Vancouver, BC-style point towers in Portland’s urban core could come one step closer to reality as the Design Commission (1900 SW 4th Ave., Room 2500A, 1:30 PM) will consider his 31-story Cosmopolitan Tower designed by LRS Architect and slated for a half-block parcel in the Lloyd District. In a short conversation in December, Weston told Portland Spaces that he plans to seek approval for the Cosmopolitan Tower, but will not break ground until the housing market improves. The Myhre Group will seek design advice on two proposals: a three-building 150-unit condominium project not far from the MAX stop at Lombard Street, and a 152-unit apartment building on NW 14th Ave. and Lovejoy St. Lastly, Designer Tad Saviner and Tim Heron of the Bureau of Development Services will present the status of the transit mall revitalization block-by-block one year into construction.

Friday

Monday February 11th Portland Spaces Magazine will debut its monthly Bright Lights discussion series at Jimmy Maks (221 NW 10th Ave., 5:30 PM gather; 6 PM talk). For the inaugural event, Portland Spaces Editor-in-Chief Randy Gragg will interview CEO Neal Keny-Guyer whose organization Mercy Corps has recently chosen Portland for its new $21-million world headquarters and World Hunger Action Center. What have they learned about urban planning in cities under stress? What kinds of crises will global economics and climate change bring to cities in the future? Explore these and other questions. The Bright Lights discussion series happens on the second Monday of every month.

Across town, join Project Cityscope for its second Pecha Kucha night at the Imago Theater Ballroom (17 SE 8th Ave., 7:20 PM). Envisioned as a medium for designers to showcase their work and ideas with brevity, Pecha Kucha’s slideshow format allows each presenter 20 images and 20 seconds to talk about each image. The last Pecha Kucha event in December at the Ace Hotel was a success.
