Bright Lights

This week, everything happens on a Monday.

The Historic Landmarks Commission (1900 SW 4th, 1:30 PM) meets today to address a proposed six-story apartment building on NW 18th Avenue and Hoyt Street with frontage on Couch Park. The half-block development designed by Sera Architects will be sited on land formerly owned by Portland Developer Randy Rapaport who sold the parcel to Opus this fall. Landmarks will also revisit proposed improvements to Portland’s Waterfront Park, including a covered shelter for the soon-to-be relocated Portland Saturday Market, new public restrooms, a new fountain, improvements to the MAX station at Ankeny Square and eventually, the construction of a new dock.

Here are two evening events you shouldn’t miss: A Fireside Chat with the Mercy Corps CEO, Randy Gragg and a pint of your favorite beer, followed by Project Cityscope’s second installment of Pecha Kucha at the Imago Theatre. Lifting the language from my colleague Rachel DeSchepper who pens the excellent Portland Spaces Design Distric blog:

“Don’t forget: Monday, Feb 11, we’re launching our inaugural Bright Light discussion series, co-sponsored by City Club of Portland. Join us for food, drinks and good conversation with Neal Keny-Guyer, Mercy Corps’ CEO”

The fun starts at 5:30 PM when the doors open at Jimmy Mak’s in the Pearl District. At 6:00 PM, Randy takes the stage with Mr. Keny-Guyer. The two will chat about Mercy Corps’ decision to land its world HQ in Old Town PDX. The entire show will be finished by 8PM, just in time to head across town and take in the second half of Monday’s other great event.

If you’ve never been to a Pecha Kucha slideshow, you should check it out. Its slim formate allows designer types a spare 6 minutes and 40 seconds to present 20 slides in 20 second increments. In other words, smart people from the design set who can (and would) talk for hours are only allowed enough time to speak briefly of their ideas while a series of photos project in the background.

Pecha Kucha commences at 7:30. See below for details.
