Reggie, Jughead and Veronica triumph over Preservation in Riverdale
Yesterday, up and over in the rolling hills of Dunthorpe, the Riverdale School District’s five-member board voted to tear down the historic Grade School designed by legendary architect A. E. Doyle and replace it with a “larger and more efficient building.” Never mind the inefficiency and carbon-footprint of demolition, the decision came down, despite a healthy amount of outcry from both community residents and historic preservationists (61% of neighbors were in favor of renovating the 88-year-old Doyle building and, not surprisingly, the Historic Landmarks Commission heartily endorsed saving the building).
Landmark Commission chair Art DeMuro told the DJC, “we’re obviously protective of the building. . .We see the building as iconic for that neighborhood and for the city.”
I’m not sure how iconic it is—as an aside I’d like to suggest, for the new year, a moratorium on the overused, bludgeony design-catchall “iconic,” please—but as a piece of the Doyle (and Belluschi—he oversaw its renovation in the late ‘20s) canon it deserves more thoughtful consideration than being dismissed as “nostalgia” by the board members.
Throwing a condescending table-scrap in the direction of the historic preservationists, today’s Oregonian noted that:
“As part of the decision, board members asked that the architects and contractors honor Doyles’ style and use some bricks from the old building.
‘I think it would be great if we could have a living museum with a historical perspective with shadow boxes and pictures,’ board member Kristin Kohnstamm said. ‘I think the kids will appreciate the building that much more.’”
Where’s the teachable moment here? That amounts to little more than a cannibalization of Doyle’s building and does little to frame the values of reuse, renewal, recycling. In an affluent community like Dunthorpe, is an adaptive reuse or restoration really so difficult?
Mahlum Architects get the unenviable honor of “replacing” the building. Possibly not as difficult as, say, being the ad agency that took on the Kool-Aid account after Jonestown, still it’s a conundrum fraught with a tad of ethical complexity. A gig’s a gig (and Mahlum are certainly deserving of work), but dislodging an aging “star” in All-About-Eve fashion can’t feel very good.
How’s about making it a “certified historic structure” and proposing an apative re-use, buoyed by Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives? Maybe the Board looked down that road. Maybe not, but with everything we know about reuse, sustainable stewardship and the social value of preservation as a catalyst for community-building, this is just a crying shame.
Dick Moe of the Nat’l Trust for Historic Preservation nails what’s really at stake:
“It makes no sense to recycle aluminum cans while throwing away entire buildings. . .It all comes down to this simple fact: We can’t build our way out of the global warming crisis. We have to conserve our way out. That means we have to make better, wiser use of what we’ve already built.”
Or we can coin a new term—Dunthorpian— to describe myopic short-term building solutions in place of bigger, better approaches to environmental, cultural and historical stewardship.

They’re hideous amalgamations of styles for people with way more money than taste (and more time too). Of course they’d opt to tear down. That’s what they live in and what they know.
